DISCUSSION QUESTIONS -

And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,…

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”
- Luke 1:12-14,18-20

  • Zechariah’s answer to his prayer was frightening to him. What is something you have been praying for regularly? What if God’s answer to your prayer requires you to step outside your comfort zone? Are you still ready to receive from God?

  • Gabriel prevented Zechariah from speaking doubt by literally taking away his ability to speak. How can we prevent ourselves from speaking doubt into our situations?

  • Zechariah found his answer to prayer while he was faithfully serving in the temple. Do you think you’re more likely to find answer to your prayer if your attending church, reading the bible, and praying? Why or why not?

  • How do you connect with God on a daily basis? What is your daily routine?

  • We see in this story that Zechariah’s normal spiritual routine lead to a beyond normal spiritual answer. Do you have a story from your life (or someone you know) where you were faithful in the small things and saw God move in powerful ways?

  • How can we pray for you today?
